My Students

Do you remember what it was like going to school? The only resources your teacher had for instruction were textbooks. Fortunately, this is not the case for today's students. They have the opportunity to not only learn through books but, they can also access additional resources via computers.

Our school is a suburban elementary located within the second largest school district.

Like many other districts, we are suffering from serious financial problems, so our school was unable to budget for classroom purchases. Our parents qualify for Title 1 services, which means they are considered to be economically disadvantaged. I am unable to ask for donations to pay for books for my class. Donors are the only hope we have for our students to completely access the curriculum in a memorable and meaningful way. My classroom is comprised of a majority Latino population. Many come from single parent homes where some parents work odd hours or double shifts. Despite the challenges faced by my students, both parents and students are determined to succeed and willing to work hard. My students' efforts are evident in much of their work and many are achieving grade level standards .

My Project

Do you remember those old bubble-shaped Apple computers from the 1990's that came in either blue or green? Those were the last computers in my classroom and now they are obsolete. Having a computer in the classroom will update our technology and expose my students to a world of information. Technology is an important component of education today. Students can access a plethora of resources using a computer. They can conduct research, learn word processing skills, and create PowerPoint presentations with this valuable resource. Due to the importance of the Internet, many publishers are now including websites, Cd's, and DVDs to supplement their textbooks. Now, students can not only read about topics such as the California Native Americans, electromagnets, and the Civil Rights Movement but they can access videos, virtual tours, and interviews, via computers.

Currently, my students go to our school's computer lab for thirty minutes once a week to complete technology-based projects such as PowerPoint presentations and to type their essays.

Having computers in the classroom will allow them to have access to this valuable resource during their independent time. By having a computer in the classroom we can begin to create a computer center where students can conduct research and complete their projects without having to leave the classroom.
