My students need a CD/tape player, music & movement CDs that are cross-curricular(focusing on literacy, numeracy, body awareness, speech and transitions).

I am a public school teacher in an urban school system. I teach integrated Kindergarten composed of 18 students, 50% special education and 50% regular education. Special needs include learning disabilities, hearing impairment, intellectual deficiency, motor impairments and autism. We have many students facing mild to severe communication difficulties and mild to moderate difficulties with social skills. Some regular education students speak English as a second language, causing even more challenges. Due to short attention spans and the special concerns of the children, I have to be very creative in order to gain attention and bridge many of the gaps we are facing. Music seems to be that bridge. When I turn the music on in the classroom, the children get up and move, even those with more moderate disabilities. They attempt to follow along with the songs and their classmates. I wish to implement a "get down" to learning program in my classroom. I would introduce various curricular concepts (including: literacy, numeracy, science, and social studies), as well as introducing social skills and language skills through the modes of music and movement. Students will participate in daily activities that will help them down the road to successful learning. Getting children up and moving keeps their attention and gets out some of their bottled up energy. It allows children to participate without being afraid to say something in the wrong way or get the answer wrong. The repetition of the songs and activities will help foster understanding of the concepts. A CD/cassette player is necessary to implement the program. The CDs and posters I would like focus on introducing academic concepts with easy songs and colorful, interesting and captivating charts. My goal is to make Kindergarten a happy, fun and motivating place for all types of learners. I love working with such a diverse group of students and hope that you will help me in making education successful for children facing so many tough challenges. You can help me show children that learning can be fun and they can be active and successful participants in our classroom community. The motivation for learning that is gained will help many of them overcome some of the challenges they face daily.
