Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 17-22-year-old young adults with a variety of intellectual, physical, and sensory impairments in our high school's Transition Program. My students are learning the skills they will need to move on to the next step in their life. This is very different for each of them. Some will live independently, with a roommate, stay at home or continue to live in a group home or facility. No matter their living arrangements they need the skills to contribute to their daily living environment.

All of my students look forward to some kind of independence and a way to contribute to society.

During the school week, we use our learned skills to cook, clean within the class and around the school. We attend weekly Community Based Instruction, where we assist a business in their daily tasks. This provides our kids with the ability to learn new skills and work with others in the community. We also practice interviewing skills, job applications, cooking, cleaning, money, time, and functional writing skills.

My Project

The use of these kitchen appliances will enable my students to learn basic cooking skills. My seniors who range in age from 17 to 22 run an in-school cookie business. Along with the cookies, my students are learning basic skills to enable them to be ready to live independently or in a group environment. Many of my students are not introduced to basic cooking skills at home.

Many of my students are capable of working in some capacity of a restaurant and I want to provide them with the necessary skills needed.

I need my students to know that they can cook for themselves and become successful members of society.
