My Students

Our school is located in Los Angeles, California just a couple miles away from USC. (Go Trojans!) We are Title I school. Our students receive free meals. Almost all of our students are minority students and English Learners.

We are a Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade classroom (yes, you read right.

I'm responsible for teaching 4 different grade levels in one classroom!) My students are on the Autism Spectrum. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder that affects learning, communication, and behavior. Students with autism also face challenges with social skills. Some students have very limited language and may exhibit challenging behaviors. This is all apparent in our classroom.

My goal is to give these students the hands-on, real-world, and enriching learning experiences, both academic and non-academic, that they need and deserve in order to succeed in and outside of the classroom. I strongly believe in building independence at an early age.

Our students come from different backgrounds, cultures, and have different likes/dislikes and needs, but in our room, we are all learners. Each day opens us to new experiences and adventures. Our days together are never the same. Their learning differences and remarkable characteristic traits are

My Project

I was sitting down on an uncomfortable chair during a training this summer break. I was squirming in my seat like a 6 year old child and re-positioning myself to get myself comfortable. All of a sudden, I thought about my students. If I can't even sit down for an extended period of time, how can they?!

I want to give my students choices and to make them the most comfortable they can be when they're at school; I learned that I needed more comfortable setting in my classroom.

My students could choose if they want to sit on the floor and use a seat cushion or a lap desk. Another option would be sitting on a rolling desk chair or a wobble chair. I felt first hand how it feels so be constrained to a stiff uncomfortable chair and I don't want that for my students. Some teachers call it flexible seating but I see it as, "sit wherever would be best for you and sit on something that would make the school day that much smoother" seating.
