My Students

PE is an essential element to educate the whole child. An active body is a healthy body. Leave the video games to get out and move!

I teach a class of third grade gifted/high achieving students in a large urban school district.

Our school is in a low socioeconomic area of the city. We are a Title I school meaning that most students qualify for free or reduced lunch subsidized by the federal government. Many students are dropped off at school around 7:30 am and some aren't picked up until 6 pm.

My Project

After attending a field trip, my class went to a park to play. I was watching the dynamic of my students as they played. The students didn't play by the rules and many students were reluctant to participate in the game of kickball. I realized at that point that I need to really work on the skills required to play the games at recess. Since PE is a required subject to teach, I need playground balls and jump ropes for my classroom, so I can properly teach my students the skills needed to participate with confidence. My school has equipment, but it is kept in a room and is passed out only at recess and lunch. So this PE equipment I am asking for can be kept in my room and I can use it at will.

I want all of my students participating without worry of their skill levels.

I anticipate that if all students have the chance to learn and practice skills of the games they play at recess, they will be more willing to participate freely. Learning the rules will make the games more fair and competitive in a positive way. Being active will help their overall health. Many students are obese, so getting them out and moving is essential for their overall being.
