My Students

My students are energetic and eager learners who love to read and strive everyday to achieve academic success.

Our Title I school is located in Brooklyn's East New York and is considered high poverty with all students qualifying for free lunch.

Budgets being what they are, classroom supplies such as technology and hands-on materials are very limited. My 4th grade class consists of general education, ELL and Students with IEPs who all come from a variety of cultures and backgrounds.

This year my goal is to better prepare my 4th graders for the upcoming NYState science written test in which environmental science is a big component. Teaching city students ecology can be challenging without hands-on activities, experiences and technology. With the right materials we can, from our classroom, travel to different ecosystems and learn about the diversity of our world.

My Project

This year my 4th graders are learning about Earth's different ecosystems and the factors that affect each one. They are responsible for understanding the different factors that change ecosystems over time and how those changes impact the living organisms and our environments. It's hard for city kids to make these connections when they live in a world of concrete and asphalt. For many of my students the most nature they get is the city park down the the street.

With these requested Apple Air 2 tablets I will be able to create environmental learning centers.

The Belkin splitter and headphones will allow small group instruction and activities. I'll also be able to connect an iPad to my SMARTBoard for whole group instruction.

The Snap Circuits Alternative Energy Green kit will give us exciting and challenging STEM hands-on activities to create renewable energy structures. Understanding renewable energy alternatives is also part of this thematic unit.
