I teach high risk 4 and 5 year old regular ed. and special ed. students in a new inclusion program for our very large district. There is limited access to libraries in our area and many of our students do not have family libraries in their homes.

This is my second year in this new school and I have a nice feel as to the needs of our community...the biggest revolving around literacy! All of the library time in the world can not take the place of a classroom library that is at our fingertips! The children continually show an interest in having books read to them and they imitate reading during quiet time with the limited resources they have. Aside from the books provided by the district to connect to the units, enhancement literature consists mostly of photo copied early readers from the Internet and other sources. The books get destroyed almost as soon as they are put together. With an additional 30 or so books, each child will have a chance to claim their own book every day and will even have the opportunity to read the same book multiple days due to the greater selection!

All of the literature selections are diverse and multicultural if not classics! The illustrations are rich and engaging and the language is phenomenal! The purpose of having a diverse and expansive library is to get our children interested in reading and to set them up for success in school from the moment they walk in until the day they graduate. Reading and language building is fundamental to their unlimited growth potential and starting with books and topics of interest should set our kids on the path to success! My goal is for each student to LOVE going to the library during free time and centers. My goal is to have my students "reading" to one another during choice and after snack time. My goal is to have my students enjoy and embrace literature...one book at a time!

Your wonderful donations will allow my students to truly fall in love with reading and language...a skill critical in all the years to come! Imagine a safe place for children to go to read, take a load off and travel to a magical land! Think of all the wonderful characters you were able to bring to life after reading an enchanting story or after looking at a mystical picture book...that is what I hope to give to my students with your help!
