Let's Eat Bugs!!

My students need samples of edible insects to taste-test. An ant farm will reinforce the scientific principles behind the reasoning of consuming insects as food.

My Students

My students are from a high-poverty area of Arkansas in the Mississippi Delta. In Nutrition and Wellness and other foods-related classes, I try to introduce topics and foods that are not familiar to my students.

When teaching about foods from other cultures, I want my students to have the opportunity to sample and taste flavors that they may not have experienced elsewhere.

While covering this topic, we talk about the fact that many cultures consume insects, either as a delicacy or as part of their everyday diet. Students are always surprised by this fact, and I am not sure they always believe the information as it is presented! I would love to be able to present this information in a more kinesthetic fashion!

My Project

This will be an entertaining project that has serious underlying learning. Students will see that there are actually insects that can be consumed, and it's not just contestants on reality television shows who eat bugs!

When I teach about the consumption of insects, students usually just think it's something they will never do and forget about it.

If students actually have the opportunity to observe live insects, and then taste samples of insects that are actually considered a treat or just everyday food in other parts of the world, they will always remember!

I am asking for an assortment of insects for students to taste, including grasshoppers, crickets, silk worms, and larvae. For the more faint of heart, I have included cricket lollipops to sample. What kid wouldn't like to be able to claim--"I ate a bug!"

This project also allow me to use hands-on learning about insects as students care for and observe an ant farm. The ant farm kit I have included in the project will reinforce some of the advantages we discuss about eating insects, particularly the small space required and the ease of feeding/raising them.
