Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Teaching Spanish in grades 3-5 requires a teacher to wear many hats. I read, write, and draw with my students, but I also do a LOT of singing and dancing to help make language learning come alive for my students. I have found that songs, chants, raps, and dances really help elementary Spanish students remember vocabulary and expressions. Ashley Elementary students are often considered disadvantaged because of low family incomes. However, Ashley students enjoy many advantages as well, such as being kinesthetically and musically gifted. These young learners remember tremendous amounts of language when this language is accompanied by dance movements and upbeat rhythms. The incorporation of songs, chants, raps, and dances drastically increases student language learning, and I have a plan to personalize our music to fit our specific learning needs. Having a small portable CD player would allow me to easily carry music on my Spanish cart that travels with me to students' classes. To make things more interesting and personal for my students, I am also requesting a digital microphone and recordable disks that will allow me to record my own teacher-made songs onto my laptop. I plan to record myself and my students to increase student ownership and motivation to learn the material. I am also asking for a pocket chart to extend learning even farther. With a pocket chart, I can post sentence strips with song lyrics to enhance my students' Spanish reading skills. With your help, a deserving group of dedicated, musically-gifted Spanish students will be on their way to singing themselves into high levels of Spanish proficiency. Look out American Idol!
