My Students

Now is the time for all kids to GET UP, GET OUT and MOVE something! Due to of the budget cuts, my students don't have equipment. All they can do is run around the track. How much fun is that? Not much at all....

My students come from a low social economic area of California, with a high percentage of the students living below the poverty line.

The neighborhood is rough with most of the students living in an apartment buildings with multiple family members. Students have limited room to move about because they don't have yards to run, play or to release some of their energy. The nearest park is not a safe walk for our school families to travel to, therefore my students go straight from school to inside their homes without of getting the daily exercise or play needed to stay healthy.

My Project

Reading, writing and math are core academic subjects, but physical education is core to building well rounded children. The requested materials will be used to teach physical education through movement activities both inside and on the playground. We will move, stretch, shake, hop, twist, wiggle, slide and jump with our bodies to various kinds of music. I plan use the rhythm and movement Cd's and activity mats to perform many various physical activities, I will copy the cd's to the I-pod and play them using the speakers so that the students will be able to clearly hear the activities. The Ipod will also be use to play other movement/dance music that our class already has. I will be able to use the speakers when working in my classroom or in the auditorium with several other classes teaching/showing them FUNdamentals of movement and the importance of becoming physically active. My students' will learn that movement is fun, healthy and will also build their motor skills.

This project is crucial because students need an outlet to move their bodies. It's not only fun but along with nutrition education it will help keep students healthy and strong by providing the needed exercise weather indoors or outside. Even when the weather is too hot, to cold, or rainy, there will be no excuse not to get up and move about, Thus reducing the obesity rates among children in the inner-city.
