Introducing my English language learners to new experiences, presenters and residents in within the community is my responsibility.

Working to foster school-community relationships with my high school English learners closes opportunities gaps. The English language learners at this mainstream high school add richness of life experience, language and culture to the school community. These students yearn to experience things their American-born peers do. Field trips provide concrete, new opportunities to expose students to careers ideas, to hobbies ideas and to simply develop an appreciation for learning outside the classroom.

My Project

High School English language learners will gain an appreciation for the arts through a week-long dance residency with the Cowles Center for the Performing Arts during this school year. During this experience, students will interact with a dance resident around rhythm, storytelling and movement. This project will support development of literacy and the arts. Students will be working with, learning from and risk-taking with a dance resident. The dance residency aims to narrow opportunity gaps, to expose students to careers in the arts and to create relationships with individuals in the community; attending a live dance performance will sustain those goals.

Attending a Ragamala Company performance will narrow opportunity gaps for new-to-country English language learners.

On Friday, April 27, 2018, 100 English learners will attend a student matinee of Ragamala Dance Company performance as a part of a literacy and arts experience.
