Let's Dance and Make Some Noise!

Help me give my students materials to motivate them to move and have fun. Using ribbons, shakers, scarves, and rhythm sticks while participating in movement activities online will break up a long Zoom session for my little learners.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a Pre-K through 5th grade elementary school that is located in South Gate, California. Approximately 98% of our student population qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch, and the majority of my students are from a lower socioeconomic background. My classes are comprised of students who are inquisitive, active, and eager to learn all about the world around them.

As we moved through the weeks of distance learning this past Spring, I noticed my students had very little opportunity to enjoy the activities they need to engage in most at their age--gross motor play and music.

This is primarily due to a lack of basic materials such as easy-to-use instruments and other materials that we use in school for fun movement games and activities.

My Project

My students need to get up and move during distance learning and they need some easy-to-use instruments and movement materials. Most of my students live with many family members in cramped living spaces. Any materials that children use for music and dancing need to be small and easy to store.

Rhythm sticks and shakers can be used to develop good eye-hand coordination while practicing following a beat, and colorful scarves and ribbons make for fun dancing props.

My young students will look forward to online learning if they're given the opportunity to move around and express their creative side in a fun, physical way.
