My Students

Inclusion in the classroom ensures that every student will have his/her needs met so that all have access to the same opportunities to learn, play, and live. We are the kindergarten and first grade teachers of an ACES (Academic, Career, Essential Skills) inclusion program for students with intellectual disabilities located in Brooklyn, NY. This program was piloted as an inclusion program for New York City last year, and it was truly wonderful to see the impact that the typically developing and non-typically developing children have on one another. Some of our ACES students have Angelman's Syndrome, which is a rare neuro-genetic disorder, occurring in 1 in 15,000 live births. Characteristics include developmental delay, lack of speech, seizures, and walking and balance disorders.

Our ACES students are wonderful, motivated, eager, friendly, and inquisitive children who deserve all of the tools/technology to help them to learn, engage with their peers, and be active members of their classroom community.

This project will contribute to the needs of students in two separate classes, a kindergarten and a first grade classroom. Having additional ways to communicate with their peers/develop emergent wring skills will contribute to providing an enriching school experience both academically and socially.

My Project

Our ACES students face complex communication delays. Providing them with additional technology, such as the AbleNet Little Step-by-Step Choice with Levels will allow for them to engage in more meaningful interactions with peers and adults. AbleNet's BigKeys keyboard will serve as an alternate pencil and will promote the development of emergent writing skills.

Our ACES students have so much to contribute to our classroom, with more pathways to communication, their motivation will be greater and their experiences will be richer.

These materials will help to enrich peer interactions and school experiences of our young ACES students, as well as their typically developing peers. These additions to our classrooms will promote a positive and inclusive classroom where all children will learn and succeed.
