This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an elementary school that serves students from kindergarten to fifth grade. We are located in the middle of a diverse and dense urban population in Los Angeles, California. We are part of a Spanish one-way bilingual immersion program.

We are a Title I school that serves low-income families from different cultural backgrounds and diverse needs.

As a Title I school, providing essential learning tools is vital in supporting student learning.

My Project

Student academic, social and emotional learning are equal parts important in the development of the whole child. Students who are confident and are able to communicate their social emotional needs perform better. Confident and emotionally strong students also reflect empathy and help create a classroom community in which peers support each other and grow together.

When students have a strong social and emotional foundation they have more tools to succeed both academically and in life.

For this reason the resources requested will help provide my students the opportunity to develop skills to create and enforce such a foundation. The growth mindset journals along with the daily writing prompts will give students the opportunity to participate in individual and community based reflective activities. These daily activities will help students find ways to communicate their emotions and will teach them skills to handle difficult emotions through positive interactions.

The art supplies requested will help create an art space or craft corner in the classroom for our future return to school. The transition back to some normalcy will be a challenging one in which social emotional learning will be a priority. Students and families are experiencing hardships and schools have provided a safe heaven for students. Therefore, I plan to create a space in the classroom where students can take time individually to find peace, take a break and create art to sooth any difficult moments they may be experiencing. Art has always provided a great outsource for emotional expression and these resources would be of great support.
