Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

You know what’s awesome? Holidays! You know what’s not awesome? The holiday picture book section in our library. Only 7 holidays are represented, and some with only 3-5 books. Almost all of our books are more than 10 years old (with half published before the year 2000) and out of the 122 currently in the collection, only 8 feature a character of color on the cover. That’s just 6%!

This project seeks to modernize and diversify our holiday book collection.

We're looking for titles that feature holidays not currently represented in our collection, such as Diwali or Dia de los Muertos, as well as books that celebrate birthdays or lots of holidays all together! These new holiday picture books will give us the opportunity to finally weed out some of the super-old and outdated titles, and make room for new, soon-to-be favorites. It also gives our student body the opportunity to learn about different holidays (which builds empathy skills) and to see themselves reflected in our library collection. We can’t wait to start celebrating!
