Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Imagine learning concepts about money by pretend shopping in a grocery store and ringing up purchases on a cash register. This is the experience my students would get with a trip to Playwise learning center. They would learn about community workers by dressing up as firefighters and climbing aboard a real firetruck. They can even enter a real ambulance to learn about becoming an EMT. I teach kindergarten at a high need title 1 school which is located right outside of Washington DC.
Most of my students are newly immigrated to the United States from Latin America and some African countries. Many speak little or no English and have never had hands on learning experiences in this country. My students love to count and manipulate with pretend money so this trip would provide an opportunity to use these skills. This would give them a hands on experience in economics and the community. Also, they love to learn about homes and families in the United States. They would set up a pretend home complete with kitchen and garden at Playwise Learning Center.
By funding this trip, they will run a pretend store and organize a pretend child sized home. They will even pick which flowers are needed to go in the garden and plant them.
Although the school will fund the admission cost to the learning center, there are no funds left to pay for a bus. With gas prices soaring and limited school funds/resources, the students will not get the hands on experiences of this trip without a bus to get them there. This trip would motivate my students in math and social studies while engaging them in hands on activities.
Your donation of a bus to take us to Playwise Learning Center will make it possible for my students to learn that math and social studies can be fun, rewarding, and important to any community. They have completed math worksheets, but this trip would allow them to experience real life math in action!
