My Students

Do you remember what it was like when your teacher first introduced you to a thesaurus? A whole new world of words had been unveiled in front of your eyes. A plethora, a variety, an array, an assortment, and a collection of new words was right there for you to use whenever you needed them.

My 5th grade class is an eclectic group of young adults.

Our classroom is full of first generation Americans speaking over ten separate languages. Our school has close to forty different languages and dialects of languages spoken here. We are a Title I school in a large urban school district, struggling to stay afloat during a time where finances are scarce and sometimes unavailable.

My Project

A thesaurus is a book that opens a world of new words and meanings up to children of all ages. It's time to put the boring, overused words to rest and let lively, robust vocabulary shine through. Students are only capable of expanding their minds as far as the resources available to them allow them to. As teachers, we push and push our children to use a variety of vocabulary in their writing; yet, our students only have access to the story vocabulary and not every day language vocabulary.

Bringing thesauruses into our classroom will make it possible for our students to sound even more intelligent.

They'll go home and use newer words with younger siblings, inspiring language growth throughout the entire family. Donating to this project can help change the vernacular our youth currently understands and relies upon into eclectic, new, and exciting.
