I am requesting architectural LEGO sets of Himeji Castle, Notre-Dame, and the Taj Mahal for my high school gifted students. I am most excited about the Notre-Dame set because, according to reviews, you build it in the way that Notre-Dame would have been built (I’m thinking this involves flying buttresses). I am planning on having my students read Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables and I will be proposing a field trip to Albuquerque to see the musical in Spring 2025 at Popejoy Hall at UNM. I will be teaching a unit on architecture around the world, so my students will learn about each of these places. I am also planning on bringing an architect into my classroom to speak with my students as part of a career exploration series, along with other professionals. The Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night set is a new version by LEGO in representing works of art and looks much more engaging than their Mona Lisa and Great Wave sets.
Due to their complexity, these sets will definitely engage my students’ critical thinking skills.
My plan is to have my students work in small groups, which will help my students further develop their collaboration and cooperation skills. I am requesting three wonders of the world sets for my middle school gifted students as these seem more manageable and appropriate when considering the age recommendation by LEGO. This set is diverse and includes the Great Wall of China, the Parthenon, the Taj Mahal, and Petra’s Al-Khazneh.
