My students hail from every corner of the world!

I work with Newcomer, Beginner and Intermediate level English as a Second Language (ESL) students in grades 6-8. All of the students have lived in the United States for 5 years or less. Many of them are new arrived immigrants from countries such as China, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Russia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and more. They are all teenagers who are faced with the challenge of surviving middle school while learning a new language and adjusting to a new life in New York City.

My Project

The goal for all of my students is to try to acquire English as quickly as possible in order to prepare them for high school. The materials that I have requested will both boost students interest in reading and also provide them with the comfort of their native countries. These new books will provide my ESL students with a wide variety of books from various reading levels, genres and interests that they can access at their current English proficiency level. Currently, many of the books available to them on or above grade level which are incomprehensible. The culturally relevant books will also allow the students to identify and connect with characters from their own culture which helps build engagement and motivation.

With your help this project will allow over 70 ESL students access to books that they can read with confidence.

By providing them with a variety of books, including those that reflect their own culture, students will be able to improve their English and build a love for reading in English!
