My students need a few packs of sentence strips, a laminator, bulletin board letters, and some masking tape to help them learn vocabulary.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Boggs's classroom raised $432

I teach for a program called the Achievement Academy. These are students who have not yet graduated from eighth grade, but are too old to stay in middle school. I teach three sections, and we have class for 90 minutes (2 normal class periods). During that time, we work on word knowledge and reading skills, by reading a variety of books and learning about words. The sad reality is that many of my students are reading at a third or fourth grade level, and to be successful in high school they will need to learn how to break down words. This is a goal of mine because I also want my students to go to college.
I have recently started to teach my students the power of words by introducing them to prefixes, suffixes, and root words. I believe, if a student can break a word down to its prefix, suffix, or root, they have the building blocks of a great vocabulary. I tell my students, that if they learn these prefixes, suffixes, and root words, they will be able to break down many types of words, which will help them when they are in college. Each week I introduce a new set of prefixes, suffixes, and root words for the kids to learn. But I think a great way to reinforce these words would be to post them on the wall.
I am asking for some sentence strips, tape, stencils, and a laminator so that I can take this prefix, suffix, root word lesson one step further. I want the students to be able to visually see all the words they have already mastered. I will visit the words every day, and we will keep building all the way to the end of the school year. I will laminate the words, so that I use them every year.
By funding this project, you will be bringing the power of reading to all of my classes, and help them develop the skills they need to be successful in college.
