My Students

The city of Chicago has received its fair share of media coverage in the past year. Shrunken public school budgets, teacher strike threats, and gun violence within a segregated and divided city is the environment my students function in. Despite these barriers, our school ranks among the best in the city, and this speaks to the character and tenacity of the young people I serve vehemently every day. The conditions they are subjected to should not hinder their opportunity at a world class educational experience. Our public high school serves neighborhood students on the southeast side of Chicago. Our demographics are roughly 70% African American and well over half are low income and eligible for free-reduced lunch. Despite these odds, we still have over a 70% success rate of college acceptance with many of our students attending ivy-league intuitions and prestigious public universities.

My students are inquisitive, brilliant, astute, and truly a vision of promise for the next generation of leaders for our society.

As a history teacher, I am always striving to enhance the historical thinking skills of my students as well as equipping them with colligate skills of research and argument based writing.

My Project

In my US history class, we spend a lot of our time evaluating and assessing things that have happened in the past. Many topics are inspiring, some are controversial. However, all of the topics we cover have some significant impact on the fabric of our country today. Your donations for this project will go towards technology that is essential for bringing history students into the 21st century through investigation, research and assessment.

The Chromebooks will be used for research of US history curriculum topics, the medium for creating presentations and allow me to provide real-time feedback on their writing using Google docs and other writing feedback mediums.

The charging station will be the formal storage location for the Chromebooks. The charging station is vital in helping me keep the cords of Chromebooks untangled along with maintaining their battery power throughout the day so each of my 150 students have their technology functioning properly. These tools allow my students to bring history education into the future, so they not only study the past but learn lessons that ensure our society does not repeat the mistakes of the past.
