My Students

My students are extremely passionate about singing and playing instruments and really enjoy making music. My students come from a very low-income neighborhood in Staten Island and represent a very unique and diverse population, one of the most ethnic populations in Staten Island. We are a Title I school and cannot afford to purchase many instruments or essential items for the music classroom. My students come to class eager and ready to learn, always with a smile on their faces. Most of my students have never been in a chorus or general music class before and I am the first chorus teacher that the school has had in about 10 years. I strive to make a difference in my school and in the lives of my students by exposing them to many different genres and styles of music and the history and culture behind them.

My Project

My students are very hands-on and enjoy playing on instruments in the classroom. They have enjoyed playing bucket percussion before and enjoy the call-and-response activities that I have conducted in class. They are very creative in the classroom and always offer insight and understanding to my lessons.

My students will really benefit from these instruments because it will give them a realistic understanding of the music of Africa, the Caribbean Islands, Latin American cultures, and other world music by exploring the different types of instruments associated with each culture.

I really want my students to appreciate and understand the significance of music from other cultures and the impact that it made on modern music today. I also want them to know the different characteristics of each kind of music, which they are only able to discover by playing the different percussion instruments associated with each kind of music.
