"If only we could bottle that energy!" is a comment often heard from people who spend time with kids.
Our school is full of students ranging from grades K-5.
These students are excited about learning and stretching their minds. They are also full of energy and yes, we adults have often said, "If only we could bottle that energy!" These students are ready to explore alternate forms of energy. As a Premiere Green school our students are active in a weekly recycle program where they are collecting the paper for recycling. They also use real silverware (no sporks) and plastic plates which are then washed. Most schools in our school district have switched over to Styrofoam and plastic. We did for awhile, but we reinvested in the real thing. We have a pride at our school for caring and investing in our planet. We have kept these traditions for years but have never gone past those investments. We are ready for the next step. The next investment. Renewable energy. Kid powered. Solar powered. Our school is devoted to making a difference in our community. A difference for our planet.
My Project
Teach For The Planet is the focus of this project. The 2 UpCycle Bikes will allow students to peddle the bikes and while peddling, the energy will be sent back into the energy grid. Students will be able to exercise while helping the school save money on energy. The students will help power the school! We, like all schools, have some students who need extra time each day expending their energy just to allow them to focus in class. The UpCycles will provide a unique opportunity for those students as well as the other students who will be excited to give the bike a whirl and help power the school. The 6 iPad solar chargers will allow students to capture the sun's energy and use that energy to power our new electrical devices: iPads and Chromebooks. It is our hope that these solar chargers will allow for some scientific inquiry opportunities around the locations of the chargers, the weather conditions (cloudy, rainy, sunny) and the actual time spent in the sun or outside.
Teach For The Planet will give our students the ability to explore, research, record, and learn about different energy options.
Our school is already a Premiere Green School but we need to discover how we can take care of our planet by finding other sources of energy. This is just the beginning of our search of alternate energy options. The UpCycle bikes and Solar Panels will engage students in math, science, technology and perhaps even in engineering.
