My Students

Classroom projects must change as students and technology change. Why document learning in class with paper and pencil when students are using handheld devices at home? Wouldn't you find a science project more exciting if you could share your findings with the world on a classroom blog?

My second grade class in the Fall will be a combination of students who had me as their kindergarten teacher, students who know me from the campus, and students who are transferring from a neighboring school that is reorganizing its building.

The common thread is their love for learning and technology. Many of the students live in poverty and are learning English as a second language. Despite their home situations, many of the students are familiar with using handheld technologies, such as iPods, and have used netbook computers in our computer class on campus. Hawaii's Department of Education is in a budget crisis, so purchasing updated technology for classrooms is not a top budget priority.

My Project

An Apple iPod Touch and HP Netbook computer will give the students the opportunity to document their learning experiences in a unique way and share their experiences with the world through a classroom blog. In an age where technology is common, students now need to proficient in using technology as well as reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. By publishing their work to a classroom blog, students will be able to share their knowledge and accomplishments with a wider community and get feedback from others. They will also take ownership of their work. With these resources, the students will create and maintain a classroom blog that documents the science projects I have planned, including documenting the life cycles of frogs, ducks, and plants, recycling everyday materials, and a field trip to the local refuse center. The classroom blog will include photos, videos, and writing and will be accessible for their families who cannot always visit the classroom.

My students are excited about all of the hands-on projects that second grade has in store for them and I am excited to encourage them to become better writers and more reflective about their learning by having them maintain the classroom blog.

The world around them is changing and technology has become a major part of their future. Will you encourage these students to take ownership of their learning by giving them updated technology to use in the classroom?
