Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are a diverse group of boys and girls with amazing personalities that blow us away every day. Our students live in the heart of a bustling urban center. They are primarily African-American and Latino. We are a special needs public school. We have students from all over our city who attend some of our special programs.

All of my students have special needs, many are primarily diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Many of them have multiple disabilities. They are learning to communicate in their own ways as they learn not only life skills but academics as well.

My Project

Our school's speech therapists, due to a generous donation, each received a new ipad. What we have noticed is that with the new operating system, some tried and true apps no longer work. We need new apps that are just as good, if not better. There are some amazing Autism apps out there that are great for our students, i.e. Buddy Bear, Autism iHelp, and Toca Boca.

Our students deserve access to the new, exciting, and powerful learning apps that come out everyday!

There are new reading apps that have come out. We want our non-verbal students to find ways to show us that they know how to read. There are apps that help with social needs, i.e. Social norms when using a public restroom, apps that teach us about emotions, or social conversations. There are apps that help with questioning, receptive and expressive. Many of the apps are free with in-app purchases. We need access to those in-app purchases too.

I don't want my student's limited by a free app's introduction screen. I want to help them meet their speech goals with full access. I want to be able to give them exactly what they need in the full capability of a great app.
