My Students

Our 5th grade students have a lot of great ideas and need an effective way to communicate them to others. We are a small school in NYC with a diverse population.

Our students come from all parts of the world, and in a lot of cases, English is their second language.

As a result, words can sometimes be misunderstood. This program is designed to teach students how to communicate in an effective way. They learn the basic skills to get their point across using words, not fists. It builds up their confidence in their ability to stand up in front of an audience, be it peers, parents, or lawyers, to state their case.

My Project

The Debate Club workshops are designed to help the students develop communication skills, which encompass the CCSS. Every day, the students are given a lesson to work through - they learn how to construct counter arguments and play devil's advocate. Each student has their own workbook and materials for case studies. Once a week, the class visitor comes in to work with them highlighting different strategies. They learn to become good citizens, and they learn how to stand up for other people's rights. At the end of the 20 week program, they compete with other schools at an event overseen by local lawyers and judges. A student may enter this program timid and shy, but they leave it with confidence and gusto. It truly is a life changing experience. Last year, we had the added bonus of visiting our local courthouse, and meeting a presiding judge.

It started off with a handful of students, and each year it grows extensively.

For one student, participating in last year's Debate Club, "made me way more confident in speaking loud and clear in front of judges, teachers, parents, and my peers. Although it was a lot of extra work, I am very glad that I had the opportunity to participate." I hope you will once again give us the opportunity to run this program.
