Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our children are dreamers. They are eager and motivated to learn. They come from families who are hard-working, and they are teaching their children that same motivation for learning. Many of our families fall below the national poverty levels; some experiencing the situation of being homeless or are home insecure. In addition, English is a second language for the majority of our families or they are bilingual households.

Every child deserves a great start.

Our children deserve no less than great. Our children are getting ready for kindergarten, and it is our job to prepare them! Having the right materials and devices is a large part of preparing students for school success!

My Project

Our preschool program is switching curriculum this year! With this big change, we need to update our listening centers. A listening center gives children to hear a story read to them on demand as well as providing them with the picture book so that they can follow along and practice following the text with their fingers from left to right. We have decided as a team that a digital listening center will be ideal because we can record parents reading the stories and make them apart of our learning. Think of the fun of listening to your best friends mom reading Pete the Cat as many times as you want!

Imagine students having the opportunity to hear a story again and again, whenever they want!

Supporting this project will give 64 preschool students this opportunity and every year that follows. A study on language acquisition found that children pick up new vocabulary quicker from repeated readings of the same book than when they encounter the same words in different new texts. (Horst, Parsons & Bryan, 2011.)

Having our listening centers go digital will provide us the ability to change our stories with ease. These MP3 players support numerous file types including those needed for audible which will further open our listening library world!
