My Students

Last year, my second grade students had visual arts with an itinerant art teacher. This year however they do not, and it is up to me to provide them with this important creative outlet. I have been incorporating art lessons into the curriculum that use the limited materials that are available.

My second graders are from diverse backgrounds and the majority are second language English learners.

Our school is located in a low socioeconomic area, where the children reside in apartments, many with multiple generational family members. Their parents cannot provide enrichment activities for them, and so it is up to me as their teacher to give them as much exposure to the arts as possible.

My Project

I am requesting art materials that are very practical but will have the potential to fulfill a wide range of art activities. Construction paper crayons are much more vivid than regular crayons and can be used on all colors of construction paper. Currently I do not have any, nor do I have watercolor paints or brushes for my students. I am introducing my students to the elements of art. It would be wonderful to have materials that would expand the visual art activities I implement.

Students are often surprised and proud at what they produce in the visual arts.

These resources would give my students an opportunity to enhance their self-esteem. Feeling good about their ability in one area often increases their confidence in other areas.
