The young adults in my classroom are students who come to school every day eager to learn. Our classroom is a collaborative community where the joy of learning is shared among many. As my students continue to grow and learn every day they struggle to find peace, comfort, and tranquility in our room due to the harsh fluorescent lighting.
Hygge is a Danish concept that means comfort, togetherness, and well-being.
In order to create "Hygge" in our room, we need light covers over the harsh fluorescent lighting. Many classrooms, including ours, are painted in dull industrial colors and have multiple fluorescent overhead lights. A key element in creating a "hygge" classroom or "hygge" corner is to start with soft lighting. Your donation of overhead light covers will help us to simulate natural light in place of fluorescent lighting!
My Project
Lighting matters -- and with your help, we can increase the amount of "natural light" students in my room will be exposed to. Natural light contains all the colors of the visible light spectrum with equal intensity however, fluorescent lights are different.
Fluorescent lighting provides light in a limited color spectrum and can have a distinct impact on moods, emotions, hormone regulation, and even sleep cycles.
The fluorescent lights found in most classrooms are a common trigger for headaches and migraines. Many students complain their eyes feel tired, sore, or even painful by the end of the day. Additionally, many of the hormones responsible for regulating moods and emotions are influenced by sunlight, including your stress hormones. The color spectrum of the light emitted from fluorescent lighting can suppress hormone production.
With your donation, we can transform our limited color spectrum light to full-spectrum white light and eliminate the glare that can interfere with learning, in a cost-effective and easy to install way!
