Imagine an elementary school without an art class. For me, it feels devoid of creative growth and guidance. My school has not had art for approximately the last 15 years. I will be my students very first art teacher and art experience across the grades of K-8! They are very excited for art to come!
I teach at a school in inner city South Philadelphia.
The school is a Title 1 school, and part of a district suffering from major cutbacks and funding issues. Being that this is the first year since a very long while that the school has had art, the students have NO art supplies in the art room. We are starting from zero. I have been spending my own money to prepare for the beginning of the year to have a few essentials for them which only goes so far, and unfortunately the district does not have the means whatsoever to provide a budget for our classrooms. I know my students are eager to learn about art. I am told by their teachers from last year of their many talents, and how they have needed an outlet for their artistic skills for so long. All students, no matter what their background or where they live deserve an equitable chance at education and art education! It breaks my heart that my students enter the classroom at a disadvantage to no fault of their own.
My Project
I have requested a variety of materials to be used by all levels of students throughout on different projects. Some of the items will be used on multiple projects like the paint brushes, cups, and other assorted painting supplies intended for use with my younger K-2nd grade students. The printmaking supplies will be used by all grades to complete a variety of printmaking projects with the younger grades focusing on the Japanese Gyotaku prints, and older grades doing block prints. The mirrors will be used by all grades to complete self portrait assignments at the beginning and end of the school year. The art games will be used as a way to assess students learning of art concepts, mostly for 3rd-8th grade. The Sketchbooks will be used for 6th-8th grade to complete art "do-now" activities as well for completing art assignments and used for assessing growth over the school year. The art magazine subscription will help enrich my classroom through authentic learning experiences.
Donations to support my classroom will make a significant difference in the lives of my students.
It will help provide them with the tools to fuel their ideas from which they can find a means to creatively express themselves. In today's schools, art is very important for students to have. It helps develop divergent thinking, problem solving skills, meta-cognitive skills, and critical thinking skills, as well encourage collaboration amongst students and global understanding of other cultures.
