Let Them Read Books!

My students need books that will introduce them to nuanced and masterful writing, as well as books that will expose them to the perspectives of people outside of their country, state, and neighborhood.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Coming from all over the city, my students represent a variety of cultures, neighborhoods, ethnicities, income levels, and languages, making our school a truly diverse learning environment where students are constantly exposed to new ideas and perspectives.

To be honest, my students are pretty much the best.

They have bad days, like we all do, but on their good days, they are funny, sweet, intelligent, loyal, curious, determined, open-minded, and eternally inspirational. These qualities are rarely allowed to fully flourish, however, due to a lack of resources and the constant upheaval of our school district, not to mention the challenges that many face outside of their classroom lives.

My Project

Last year, our AP Literature program had 21 students. In one year, it has expanded to 36 students, with many more on the waiting list. While this many students excited to learn about great literature is an English teacher's dream come true, our book room cannot accommodate this sudden influx of students; as a result, almost half of the students in my class are without books.

My students -- who are poised, waiting to explore the complex characters, nuanced writing, and compelling themes of these canonical texts -- deserve access to these great works.

It is the novels, plays, and poems that drive the course; that get students to reach deeper levels of understanding; that engage them in heated discussions; and that prepare them to confidently walk into the testing room on the day of their AP exam.
