This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students live in Washington, DC. Our students are African-American. They are limited in resources, with over 95% of them qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. They come from low-income neighborhoods in the Washington, DC area. Our public elementary school needs a variety of learning opportunities for quality engagement, challenge, and motivation in order to best function. We know supporting our students in this stage of their development can be the turning point for our students. We offer an alternative education that empowers our students to believe in themselves and their ability to positively impact the world.
My Project
The students need supplies to be successful. The backpack kits contain items such as pencils, notebooks, folders, scissors, crayons, paper and a bag to hold all the supplies. Many of the students returned to school with out supplies or a small amount of items and they are now depleted. These backpack kits will help the students who don't have supplies be successful and take the stress off the parents who can't afford to buy the supplies.
I am also asking for individual dry erase boards due to COVID the kids have limited movement and have to spend most of the time at their desk.
Providing dry erase boards can help them participate in activities without leaving the desk.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
