My students are preschoolers who attend school in North Carolina. This school is a public school located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In this unique school, the staff teach and support young children with special needs in an inclusive learning environment. As a Licensed, 5-Star Developmental Day Program, children are served in a smaller class size setting to better meet their multiple physical and learning needs. The school enrolls up to 125 children from 3 years old to 11 years old. About 25% of the students do not have special needs, so children with and without disabilities play and learn side-by-side. The school primarily serves preschool children, but it also has a typical kindergarten class and two elementary classes for students with significant disabilities. Students are taught and cared for by a highly qualified and specialized team of teachers, therapists, and a school nurse that are dedicated to helping children meet their maximum learning potential.
My Project
Research shows that pretend play and building with blocks support a child's development to build a strong foundation for later learning. How can we extend and support that play?
Adding accessories to our block center will enable students to expand their play and give them a greater opportunity to build the foundation for their education.
Traffic signs, vehicles and diverse people--including people with disabilities-- added to our block center will spark the imaginations of our young learners!
You can provide limitless opportunities for my students by donating props to extend their play!
