My Project

Children learn through play. Play is important for problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration. "Play is our brain's favorite way of learning" (Diane Ackerman). Not only do classic board games, card games, and building games develop strategic thinking and fine motor skills, they help children learn social skills, like fair negotiation, compromise, and empathy.

Help my fourth-grade students develop healthy social and emotional skills by playing classic games like checkers and Jenga during indoor recess.

Building toys, like Legos and Magna-Tiles, will help my students with three-dimensional spatial reasoning. Spirograph is great for students who love to draw. Children also enjoy the challenge of deciphering a Rubik's cube. And who can resist the fun of Taco vs. Burrito?

The games and toys in this project will be shared among six 4th grade classes so that a maximum number of students can have the opportunity to explore these engaging alternatives to computer games. Unfortunately, children gravitate towards computer games which can be very isolating. I want to provide my students with collaborative games, because I believe that all the learning in classrooms, both academic and social, will serve students well in their later lives.
