Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My seventh and eighth-grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. My students are diversity personified from painfully shy to audacious, from studious to silly, from spoiled to neglected, from being treasured to experiencing trauma.

The pandemic has hit them hard: their natural exuberance has taken a hit because they are isolated from their friends and teachers.

Many of them are developing anxieties that may potentially take years to overcome. Getting back to normal can't come soon enough—we need to mitigate the learning loss and social isolation they are currently experiencing. Unfortunately, many of them have lost close family members to COVID and are struggling with grief as well. Although I can't solve these problems, I can do my very best to provide my students with learning opportunities that will excite them and allow them to focus on better days ahead.

My Project

The push to reopen schools is growing by the day even though infection rates are still climbing in our county and across the states. My students and I are understandably anxious about returning to campus because our school was built in the 1950s and our facilities are showing their age.

If the windows don't open in our classrooms, how will we ever have adequate ventilation in our classrooms?

I am doing my best to outfit our aging portable to prevent the spread of infections. With the help of DonorsChoose.org and kind donors, we have HEPA air filters, a sanitizing wand, masks, and an automatic hand sanitizer station. I am hoping that we can also have this portable sink in a corner of my classroom. As you know, the CDC recommends washing hands frequently to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Hand sanitizer is okay in a pinch, but I'd like my students to have the MOST effective hygiene practices available in my classroom. This portable sink would give us two stations for hand washing and give us all a little more peace of mind when it comes to staying safe and healthy when we return to our classroom.
