Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello, I am the music teacher at Centennial Avenue Elementary School, located in Roosevelt, New York. Centennial Avenue School is a K-6 school in which I teach general music to grades 1-6. In our school, we have many talented students. They can sing, dance and act. You name it, they can do it. However, our music program is limited. We do not have an instrumental teacher. Although we do have a band teacher, his schedule is stretched between the three elementary schools in our district. As you can imagine, that is no easy task. So, he only works with select 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. What about our other students? This is why we would like to incorporate a piano lab. It is said that learning to play the piano is the gateway to learning other instruments. Studies have shown, children who learn how to play an instrument do well in other academic areas, such as math. It will also help with their coordination, fine-motor skills, spatial awareness and self-esteem. In order to implement this program effectively, we will need several keyboards. I strongly believe the students will enjoy learning to play this fundamental instrument while increasing their academic aptitude in other areas. You can help our students to succeed and get the well-rounded education they deserve. Thank you for your consideration!
