My Project

Hi, and thank you for reading my proposal. I am a science teacher at a lovely public school in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn. We are fortunate to have a hydroponics lab, where we grow vegetables, learn about the parts of plants, photosynthesis, food justice, environmental science, climate change, and so much more!

Because of the recent drastic budget cuts to Education in NYC public schools, it is very unlikely that my school will be able to purchase things like furniture for the fall.

In order to do the best work we can, I am asking for help in getting appropriately-sized tables and stools for my students. The tables and stools that we currently have are really suited for middle school-age students and older, and I do not feel safe having my 3K-2nd grade students sitting on them.

To deal with this issue I moved the big tables out of the lab and have students sit on cushions on the floor, and give them clipboards to work on. This was a quick fix for this school year but not something that I want to continue as I don't think it is in the best interest of the kids. Many of the students are just learning how to write, and sitting properly at a table will help them to write better, focus better, and organize their materials better.

And don't worry, the big tables and stools have been repurposed - nothing goes to waste in a public school! Thank you for your interest in and support of public school education.
