My Project

2050 is a pivotal year for the global population in terms of food scarcity and agriculture. With a rapidly growing population and no extra space for more farming, innovative methods must be used to feed our global population. For AP Environmental students, as well as Earth Science students, this sustainable hydroponics farming kit will help me show students alternatives for gardening and farming that don't require the land space that traditional methods use.

With this setup, students will learn about solving food insecurity and sustainable agriculture on a smaller scale.

Traditional agricultural methods use a large amount of water and take up quite a bit of space. This will help me to show my students on a small scale, how agricultural techniques can be modified to be more sustainable and efficient, as well as to solve issues relating to food insecurities, which are only predicted to increase in the coming decades.

Both AP Environmental Science and Earth Science curriculums delve into the challenges of feeding a growing population, as well as more sustainable methods of farming and growing food. The curricula also call for innovative solutions to these problems. I look forward to being able to not only show my students one of these solutions but also to teach them how to successfully run a hydroponics system. This knowledge could help to feed them in the future or help them innovate solutions to feed their communities or even the world.
