My Students

Located in the lower east side of Manhattan near Chinatown, heavily minority area, my school offers dual language program to students from Kindergarten to 8th grade (English and Mandarin Chinese) in district 1, and is the first English-Mandarin bilingual school in the country. Around 70% of the students come from Asian heritage-families. In addition, 70 percent of the students are free or discounted lunch recipients.

I am always amazed by how creative my students are in music classroom.

For example, after being taught the song "Hey there, Friends!", my lovely first grade students were able to chant it in Chinese and to create a brand new version of English lyrics in the following week. It is so wonderful to see children in different colors and cultural backgrounds sing and chant in both English and Mandarin Chinese!

My Project

Due to the average socio-economic backgrounds and shortage of school budget, there is no way for me to get the iPad sets for my students during our general music lessons. I know my students' unlimited potential, and I know how joyful the experience of digital music making can be, but unfortunately they do not have the digital devices to work with.

We are requesting six iPads and cases.

What are projects and possibilities my students can create with iPads in the music classroom? The answer is: More than you can imagine! Students can learn general music theory and instrument-playing much more effectively through apps like Singing Fingers, Notes Teacher, Yousician, and Simply Piano. They can also easily create their own beats or songs through apps like Garage Band, Soundtrap, and Noteflight. When they are finished with their compositions, they can share them on the cloud and anyone in the world can hear their music!

How many students and how long the students can benefit from these iPads in music classroom? Nearly 700 students can gain amazing music-making and powerful music-learning experience which will expose them to the infinite possibilities of music editing, composing and performing skills. It will definitely benefit for the rest of their lives.
