Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach drama (6th-8th grade) and English (8th grade only) at an arts-based public middle school in East Harlem. Drama at this school is an elective, incorporated into the daily schedule.

Each year I up the ante when it comes to the annual drama show. Two years ago it was an edited version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, last year a student wrote a play about his grandmother suffering from Alzheimer's disease (and it was produced on a professional, off-Broadway stage), and this year we tackled the sophisticated text of Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses. This coming spring, we will stage Moises Kaufman's The Laramie Project. With each production, the kids become more enthusiastic and committed, the sets become more elaborate, and the parents, consequently, become more supportive. Nevertheless, I still hear the same thing at the end of each production: "That was great, but it was kind of hard to hear the kids sometimes." I can't stand it! To spend so many hours in rehearsal, only for the kids to not be heard during the performance, is incredibly frustrating.

To resolve this issue, we need a set of five microphone headsets so the audience can hear what the students are saying on stage at all times. A previous proposal funded three sets, but there are times when more than three actors are onstage at once, so now I'm asking for two more. If they know that they're being heard, my students will have the confidence to give each performance their very best. Many of the school's alumni attend performing arts high schools; they need to have worthwhile and confidence-building experiences with theatrical performance in middle school to better prepare them for what's ahead.

It's all up to you. Theatrical performances must be heard--otherwise, a great deal is lost. Help my students connect to their audience by giving them the chance to shine.
