My Students

My 32 students have a strong desire, eagerness and ecstasy for learning. This excitement for school should be a perpetual component in our classroom, but as the temperature rises, this desire decreases. Our classroom doesn't have a working air conditioner, and this creates an environment that is intolerable to learn in.

My school is located in an area which is quickly becoming the epicenter of Brooklyn.

It is becoming one of the most rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods in Brooklyn; however, as housing prices and the cost of living increase, my students and their families are living with very few opportunities.

I have several students who have Individual Educational Programs (IEP’s) who needs that extra bit of comfort to focus and achieve their educational goals. Also, some of my students are in the shelter system.

School is often the only safe haven that these students have. This safe haven should also be a place of physical comfort. When the temperature rises and humidity takes over, this comfort instantly leaves the room. If the physical environment for learning becomes unbearable, then school no longer becomes a place of retreat.

My Project

If granted a portable air conditioning unit, my students will be able to learn in a comfortable, stable environment. With a comfortable classroom, my students will remain excited to come to school each day without worrying about feeling dehydrated or overheated. When the temperature outside is continuously rising, it can have many effects on my students' performance in class. The students struggle to pay attention. In addition, being hot and having to do work affects a student’s focus and health. Exposure to heat may lead to headaches, nausea, vomiting, and rapid heart rate. Some of my students have been experiencing nose bleeds because of the severe heat.

The simple comfort of learning in a cool environment will allow them to take risks with their learning.

Installing an air conditioner in the classroom offers a better way to keep pupils and staff comfortable, leaving teachers able to concentrate on teaching and pupils on learning.

A cool learning environment will promote their ability to be enduring with each other and aid in the enhancing of their social and emotional skills. The benefits of having a portable air conditioning unit are boundless.

Donations to the project will allow my students to have the same learning experience as students in more well-off districts who don't need to worry about the simple privilege of a cool and comfortable classroom.

My students will be cool and comfortable, but more importantly, they would learn about the kindness and generosity of strangers, in a world where we seldom experience this. If prisons can have air-conditioning, why not schools?
