My Project
As a first grade teacher, my students are just learning to think beyond themselves.
Therefore, activities about compassion will create an emotionally safe environment and ease the way students are feeling.
The materials needed for this compassion project are colored paper, storage system, shrink wrap, stickers, colored pens, inspirational posters, snacks, and children masks.
The colored paper, storage system, pens, and stickers will be used for making cards. This activity encourages students to consider the feelings and experiences of their peers. By creating cards for those that had a rough day, feeling sad, or just because, students learn to think about others and see how their actions make a difference in someone else's day. The shrink wrap will be used to covered the shelf housing the card making supplies when not in use during the summer.
The inspirational posters displayed in the classroom will remind students to show compassion to others. Compassion will grow throughout the classroom, school, and into the larger community. The shrink wrap will used to cover the posters on the wall so it doesn’t get damaged during summer cleaning.
The snacks are for the hungry students in our classroom not only addresses their immediate physical needs but also teaches valuable lessons about looking out for one another. The snacks and stickers can also be used to reward students who are caught doing compassionate acts. The children masks are for students that request one when they are sick since they don't want to spread germs.
Lastly, I'll gauge the students comprehension of compassion when they demonstrate acts of compassion towards their peers.
