My Project

Sometimes students need help bringing the ideas in ancient literature to life in the present world. As part of our 9th grade ELA curriculum, students analyze creation stories from around the globe. But how do we help students understand why and how the ideas in these stories are still relevant today? Students of all ages learn best by doing, so in this project, students collaborate to become a “creator”by learning how to grow a plant from a seed. Through this process, students will record and reflect on their experiences as caretakers of their plants and will make critical connections between the growing process and common themes and cultural values found in world creation stories such as the importance of community in “growing” and caring for others, making mistakes and persevering, showing appreciation for things both large and small, recovering from disappointment, and handing down knowledge and tradition to others. At the end of the project, students will use their observations and literary analysis to create an infograph to share with the larger school community. Students will use the seeds, pots, soil, fertilizer and watering cans to grow plants indoors, replanting them outside in the spring. This project is especially important for my students, the majority of whom qualify for food assistance and come from incredibly diverse backgrounds. Most do not have equal access to experiences like growing plants or learning to garden. Growing something of their own will increase confidence, collaboration, and make the texts we read more engaging. These experiences will lead to deeper critical thinking and literacy skill development, giving them a better chance at overall academic achievement.
