My Students

We are a Title I, K-5 elementary school located in the heart of North Portland. We have an unique population of students from over 20 different countries. 100 percent of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. We try and address as many needs as possible at our school, but often lack the funding to provide the technological resources we need.

Many of our English Language Learners come to our school with no prior education.

The challenge of learning English and building proficiency in content subjects is overwhelming for many of our students. A lack of prior schooling has many of our refugee students completing schoolwork several grade levels behind their peers.

My Project

We are asking for a DJI Mavic Air drone to support STEAM and language learning at our school. Students will be introduced to the principles of aviation and be asked to use a drone to complete hands-on problems solving activities.

Each child will be asked to estimate the perimeter and area of local geography by measuring the length of surrounding vehicles in an aerial photo.

Using the ratio of car measurements, students will be able to create a scale on a map. As our English language learners estimate the size of their surrounding landmarks, we will use sentence frames to help our students describe their photos. Students will then use newly acquired language to create a paragraph about their image with adjectives and conjunctions.

We want to create a love of solving real world problems with math and technology. With your donation and these supplies, we hope to inspire the next generation to elevate their learning from new heights!
