This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is made up of about 350 students that represent the culturally diverse population of New York City. Our students bring so many talents into our school that it would be impossible to name them all in one sitting. They are creative, enthusiastic, and determined young men and women who have big dreams about life after high school.

I am deeply inspired by their resilience.

In spite of the obstacles that they face at home and in the streets our students continue to come to school. They come in well before first period starts and they often stay long after the last period has ended - why? Because as one of my students aptly stated earlier this year, "I want to get my family out of the negative cycle of poverty. I want to change our future."

Our students work hard and are eager to do so because they understand that the value of education extends beyond the classroom. Their drive motivates us to provide them with the very best educational experience we can offer.

My Project

Most of us dread the thought of public speaking, and my students are no different! However, we live in a world where effective communication skills are vital and I want to equip my students with the tools they need to be successful both in school and in life. One of the ways to do this is to practice public speaking in the classroom. The materials I am requesting will help students understand that effective communication involves a number of other traits beyond speaking. The podium will reinforce soft skills like: having great posture, facing your audience, making eye-contact, and being prepared. The microphone and speaker will amplify their voices so they will learn that one must speak deliberately, clearly and professionally.

I want my students to know that their voices matter.

I also want them to be respectful when people are speaking. This, however, does not happen overnight. Developing the confidence to speak in front of an audience takes practice. Listening respectfully takes practice. Having a designated space for students to do both is the first step.
