My Students

My students are kindergartners, primarily English Language Learners (ELLs), at a Title I public school in Queens, New York. For many of my students, this is their first time in school. Despite the language challenges they face, they are enthusiastic and eager to come to school to learn. Their hope and my goal is the same. It is for each child to meet with success daily. My students are in need of varying tools in order for them to further develop their physical, social-emotional, cognitive, and language skills.

My Project

Having individual headphones for our iPad listening center will provide my students with another resource they can use to build their English language skills. The headphones will be used during our literacy center time in our schedule. Most children genuinely enjoy listening to stories. They especially love to hear them over and over again. Having this addition to our classroom, will provide the students with the opportunity to listen to a variety of voices reading to them, rather than just mine. Listening to stories will enable my ELLs to connect sounds with print. Listening and comprehension skills will be increased as will fluency.

Additionally, it will help foster reading independence, self-confidence, and most importantly, a love of reading.
