Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

At our school, a New York City public school in the Bronx, I teach AP Computer Science, an Arizona State University Cloud Computing Course, and Intro to Programming to high school seniors. My students have responded really well to the curricula and we have increased our level of participation in these courses over the last 8 years.

Using these lego sets I will be able to incorporate manipulatives and hands-on experiences for my students when teaching key computer science concepts such as algorithms, sequencing and encapsulation.

In my classes students are learning JavaScript to create animated short films, video games and apps, and having unplugged activities to work with the concepts is always incredibly beneficial. I believe engagement and understanding of these concepts will stem from student groups not just following the prescribed algorithms to build sets, but by giving them the freedom to design, build and create their own algorithms. This will allow students to consider and create protocols, and in turn to play with the key CS concepts of decomposition and modeling. These will also be beneficial in helping my students engage in the iterative design process in a different way, beyond software development.

These Lego sets will be accessible to all of my students, including my ENL students and students with IEPs, giving them all an enhanced level of engagement in analyzing content choice, programming structures and scripts, and by enabling physical experiences with key CS concepts. Thank you for your time and consideration!
