Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a low socio-economic status community. The majority of my students are English Language Learners. I have three students in my class that speak Spanish only and the rest of my class has minimal English. In order to help my students develop their vocabulary and language skills, I need to provide them real world and hands on items to engage in conversations.

My school has become STEAM focus.

My class lacks the resources in order to properly integrate STEAM into instruction and play time. Research has shown that play based activities build not only emotional cognitive development skills but builds their social cognition, vocabulary and language skills. I need to engage my students in hands on games and materials to help foster the STEAM integration and develop real world conversations with my English Language Learner students.

Therefore, having STEAM manipulatives and games that allow students to build things, collaborate with their peers, and problem solve would be greatly appreciated.

My Project

These Legos will help my students not only be creative and use hands on materials for engagement purposes, but allows students to work together and collaborate. My English Language Learners need to experience learning in ways they can make connections and meaning to their learning. Legos are a great source and use of manipulatives to help foster problem solving skills and allows them to discuss with their peers ways to build things that relate to the material learned in class. Working together with their peers is necessary in order to build academic language, as well as social and emotional skills to foster cognitive development.In Kindergarten, we teacher community helpers. Therefore, these Legos will allow students to build the places where community helpers work.
