Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have been teaching for sixteen years, and yet still feel as fresh and hopeful about my work as the day I began. At scant moments when my resolve falters, within seconds a flood of images, sounds, and smiles spill forth to remind me of just how privileged I am to do this work.

This work--at moments both big and small--is all about the kids.

As such, as I move about in the world, I am always thinking of the work and the kids--they are so curious, and so ready to demystify what can seem oblique and impenetrable. In our classroom, moving from abstract ideas to concrete models and solutions is an extremely satisfying (albeit it seemingly endless) pursuit, and my co-teacher and I strive to make content and concepts as dynamic and real-world friendly as possible. This is rich and layered work, and the kids respond in kind. We love what we do, and the only real downside is there is never enough time in the short, short year to get it all in.

My Project

This spring, I will teach an after-school club to about 20 3rd, 4th and 5th graders who are sorely in need of time to deepen friendships, explore new ideas, and build positive connections with our school community. In the past, I've taught an after-school writing and art club, and while that endeavor was successful to a point, it didn't attract the kiddos that I really wanted to engage. With your donation, I will now make LEGO bricks the star of the show. LEGO bricks are such a powerful lure, and will no doubt bring in a slew of kids who would otherwise be slightly less-than-interested in a plain, old after-school writing club. Plus, these LEGO bricks will serve countless iterations of this after-school club for years and years to come--so the possibilities are endless, and yet unknown. Thank you for your consideration!
