Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Besides teaching IB Biology and Physics, I coach a very successful urban Academic Decathlon team. At a recent event on a long Saturday this past week, I told my students how this past year one of my coping mechanisms to relax and destress has been to start building LEGO models of cityscapes and buildings. I never did it as a child, so I think I am appreciating the process even more so because of it.

As we were talking at the team table between events, I was blown away to learn how many of my students on the team share a similar interest and how many of them share that they too experience a kind of therapeutic effect during and after building LEGO sets.

However, we all agreed that buying LEGO sets is so expensive-almost unattainable to the average student.

So, we came up with the idea for a club to allow students to work on small and large LEGO projects to destress, mentally take a break and create a safe space to allow students to focus on something concrete, tactile and to momentarily get away from the daily school grind and alleviate any mental anxieties that plague all of us throughout the day. We envision a space in the back of my room or in an adjacent room, with large tables and students coming in and building anytime they need to, picking up where others left off, getting in their own zone and meditating in the process. I envision my students building models related to science, history and technology and in time connect them to something curricular using the requested LEGO sets. For now, it will just be a fun distraction and a quiet space to get away from it all.
